Just read a blog post about a conversation the writer had with a random person at a pizza place about the local area. The parties did not know each other. The other customer was thinking about moving into the area and asked the writer a few questions about the area, the writer answered all of the questions the SAME WAY that a real estate agent had and gave the SAME INFORMATION to this random person and you know what the person said? “Thanks, you know you can never trust the Realtor.”
So, my questions: WHY would someone work with an agent that they did not trust? Why would one take the random musings from someone met in line at a pizza place, coffee shop, etc, etc, etc, over the information provided from someone who works in the area, has their best interest at heart and if they are a Realtor, subscribes to the Realtor’s Code of Ethics, which in Article 1 States:
When representing a buyer, seller, landlord, tenant, or other client as an agent, REALTORS® pledge themselves to protect and promote the interests of their client. This obligation to the client is primary, but it does not relieve REALTORS® of their obligation to treat all parties honestly. When serving a buyer, seller, landlord, tenant or other party in a non-agency capacity, REALTORS® remain obligated to treat all parties honestly
Why? Why? Why? Is it because they do not trust their own abilities to ask the questions of an agent and make their own rational decision? Is it because a Realtor has become synonymous with the dreaded “sales person”? Or, have we, as a people, lost our ability to reliably tell if someone is telling us the truth?
I fear that it is a combination of the above with the added issue that there is so much information available (and it is changing so fast) that we no longer feel we can make a decision based on “all” of the facts. We then tend to feel disempowered to make our own decisions, keep going around in circles and categorizing those that provide us information as the untrustworthy ones.
Who do YOU trust to help you find information? What could we do to change the culture around trust/distrust? When do YOU find yourself losing trust? How much information is enough? Why is the idea of trust important?
