I wasn’t going to do it! Not ME! I was NOT going to add to the dreck that is everywhere at this time of year – a post on New Year’s Resolutions!
But then, I did a little soul searching and realized that perhaps I do have something to offer to all of you folks as we end one year and begin another.
I have a few questions for you about the year just passed:
Did you spend any time getting your “buttons” pushed?
Did you spend any time wishing you were somewhere or someone “else”?
Did you spend any time lonely? Not alone but lonely?
Did you spend any time jealous? Of a relationship? Of a gift? Of an invitation that did not come to you?
Did you spend any time worn out or depleted?
Did you spend any time doing things out of obligation?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, I invite you to do something that might in the short term, seem a little odd, but I assure you, will make the months to come MUCH more enjoyable for you and for everyone around you!
Got your buttons pushed? Clear out the clutter in the Kitchen area of your home.
Spend time wishing you were somewhere or someone else? Clear out the clutter in the Living Room area of your home.
Spend time lonely? Clear out the clutter in your Family Room area.
Spend time jealous? Clear out the clutter in your Bathroom area.
Spend time wishing you weighed less? Clear out the clutter in a few closets.
Spend time worn out or depleted? Clear out the clutter in your Bedroom area.
Spend time doing things out of obligation? Clear out the clutter in your Front and Rear Door areas.
Here is the rub, some people hear “clear out the clutter” and think – “oh, I don’t have any clutter, I keep a neat house” and yet EVERY time I walk into someone’s home with any of the above issues, I GUARANTEE there is clutter in those areas!
Don’t believe me? Try this experiment: Ask a friend to come over and look around your house for things that seem “clutter-like.” I KNOW they will find things – yes, you have to give them carte blanche to open all of the drawers and closets, but you have nothing to hide and a lot to gain, right?
You will be shocked when you discover that “my neat house” (when looked at through the eyes of someone who wants the best for you), will transform into a huge space full of things you are better off without!
Still think your house is in great shape? Then go to your basement, your attic, your garage, your storage unit, your car, your computer and clear the clutter out of THOSE areas too. When you get going I know you will think of more places that could use a helpful eye, right?
Want to know what will happen?
You will glance around and think – “hmmm, nothing here” and walk away!
You will procrastinate!
You will start and then get called away by something more “important”!
You will get tired and cranky!
You will curse the day you EVER read this post!
You will get overwhelmed by emotion! Yep, YOU, good old “I have it together” you! Good old “I know all about this stuff and it doesn’t work” you. Good old “I don’t need to do this easy stuff, I am more advanced than this” you!
Emotions you thought you had “dealt with” a LONG time ago will surface as you try to get rid of that picture hanging on the wall, or throw away those old tea towels you never use, or go through the paper on your desk.
Guess what? YOU are normal! No matter what else happens in your life, when you try to divest ourselves of things/feelings/relationships/habits, you MUST face the under-lying “stuff” or you are doomed to repeat the same thing over and over and over.
Want to have the same experiences in 2012 as you have had for so many years of your life? Make those same old, tired New Year’s resolutions. Keep doing what you are doing, don’t spend any time looking deeply and guess what? YOU WILL!
